Abstract. This article presents an overview of pre-evolutionary works on the history of the Irtysh ten-verst strip. It is determined that the majority of the authors are representatives of the Royal bureaucracy or the Cossack class, which could not but affect the objectivity of the coverage of the material in their studies. A significant part of the information we are interested in is collected by Cossack officers, who, as representatives of the Siberian Cossacks, acted in defense of the interests of the army, which had its purpose and practical task: justification of belonging of the ten-foot strip to the Cossacks. Studying this issue will help us recreate a complete historical picture of the socio-economic development of the region. The need for such work is determined by the possibility to study the spectrum of relations between the Russian and Kazakh peoples, the mutual influence of national cultures, economic contacts and their further influence on the traditional way of life of the Kazakh people. The article proves that one of the signs of pre-revolutionary literature is its descriptive nature. It is shown that in the pre-revolutionary period accumulated significant factual material on the history of Kazakhstan, created the basis for the formation of fundamentally new directions.
Key words: Priirtyshye, historiography, Siberian Cossacks, land use, irtyshskaya band, Kazakh population.
